Everyone except ME. My parents died in a car ACCIDENT last November. Since then, I’ve lived alone with my grandmother. She was the woman who raised me, protected me, and tried to be both a parent and a best friend at the same time. But her hands shook now when she poured tea. So I knew she couldn’t make it to my graduation. She got winded just walking to the mailbox. At school, people noticed. I ate lunch alone and walked to my car alone. When other students took family photos after pep rallies, screaming names and swapping hugs, I stood a few feet away, checking my phone like I had somewhere else to be. I almost SKIPPED graduation entirely. “What’s the point,” I told my grandmother the morning of, “if NO ONE’s going to be there?” But my grandma took both my hands in hers. “Just get your diploma, sweetheart,” she said. “One last day. Do it FOR ME.” I didn’t know she’d spent the last three weeks writing a single LETTER addressed to someone I hadn’t spoken to in over a YEAR. I didn’t know it had already been ANSWERED.
