Even appliances that seemed perfectly harmless when sitting idle were apparently not allowed to remain connected to an outlet for very long.

His explanation was always the same:

I wasn’t convinced.

To me, it seemed like a lot of effort for something that couldn’t possibly make a significant difference. Surely a device that wasn’t actively being used couldn’t consume enough electricity to matter, right?

Many modern electronic devices remain partially active when you switch them off.

A television may appear completely dark, but it can still be waiting for a remote-control signal.

A game console may be switched off while maintaining certain background functions.

A smart speaker needs electricity to remain ready for voice commands.

A microwave may continue powering its clock and electronic controls.

A printer may remain in standby mode so it can respond quickly when you send a document.

A charger may continue drawing a small amount of electricity even when the phone is no longer connected.

This doesn’t necessarily mean these devices are wasting enormous amounts of energy.

In many cases, the amount is very small.

But multiply that tiny amount by many devices operating continuously, and the total can become more meaningful.

## What Is Phantom Power?

Phantom power refers to electricity consumed by certain devices while they are not performing their main function.

Think about a television.

When you’re watching it, it is actively using electricity to display an image, produce sound, process information, and perform other tasks.

When you turn it off, some modern televisions don’t become completely electrically inactive.

Instead, they enter a standby state.

They may remain ready to receive a signal from the remote control, perform scheduled updates, maintain network connectivity, or quickly resume operation.

That standby consumption can be small.

But the important point is that it can continue for hours every day.

The same basic principle applies to many other electronics.

## Not Every Appliance Uses the Same Amount

This is where the debate becomes more complicated.

It would be inaccurate to say that every appliance uses significant electricity simply because it remains plugged in.

Some devices consume virtually nothing when disconnected from active operation.

Others use a small but measurable amount.

And some devices can use more electricity in standby than you might expect.

Older electronics are particularly worth considering.

Technology has changed considerably over the years, and modern energy-efficient devices are generally designed to reduce unnecessary consumption.

Still, there is no universal rule.

Two appliances that look similar may have very different standby behavior.
