My mother’s face went pale.
My father finally spoke.
“Ethan,” he said carefully, “what exactly do you mean?”
“I mean the acquisition closed twelve days ago.”
“For how much?”
“Headline valuation was $170 million.”
Grant shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
“No,” I said quietly.
“It just wasn’t important to you.”
Nobody laughed.
I took out my phone and opened the announcement.
Then I slid it across the table.
Grant picked it up.
He read the headline.
Then he read it again.
His eyes moved across the screen.
His jaw dropped.
His wife leaned over his shoulder.
My father stepped closer.
And suddenly the family that had spent years dismissing my business was intensely interested in every detail.
“What were the terms?” my father asked.
“Cash and stock.”
“How much stock?”
“Why?”
He hesitated.
“No reason.”
But there was a reason.
I could feel it.
And then my mother asked the question that revealed something even more disturbing.
“Why didn’t you tell us?”
