For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then I heard her take a shaky breath.
“I can’t explain this over the phone.”
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean? Did my father do something?”
“No,” she replied quickly. “At least… that’s not how I would describe it.”
Her answer only made me more confused.
“Rachel, you’re scaring me. Please tell me what’s going on.”
“I can’t. Not on the phone.”
“When can we meet?”
“Tomorrow morning.”
“Why tomorrow? Why can’t we talk today?”
“I need some time to think. Please.”
Her voice sounded strained, as though she were struggling to decide what to say.
I wanted to demand an explanation, but something in her tone stopped me.
“All right,” I finally said. “Tomorrow morning. But you have to promise you’ll meet me.”
“I will.”
Then she ended the call.
I sat there staring at my phone, trying to make sense of the conversation.
