The groom. The pool. The bride falling backward. The laughter.

I should have stepped away.

I should have reminded him of the promise he had made.

But we were standing at our wedding, surrounded by people who had come to celebrate our marriage. My dress was expensive, my hair was carefully arranged, and the photographer was waiting for us to pose.

I didn’t want to turn a simple photograph into an argument.

So I smiled and said, “Sure.”

Daniel placed his arm around me and began leaning me backward.

I trusted him to hold me.

I trusted him to keep his promise.

I trusted him because I believed that marrying someone meant you could rely on them when you were vulnerable.

Then, just as I leaned back for the photograph, he let go.

For a split second, I couldn’t understand what was happening.

The sky tilted above me. My arms flew outward, searching for something to grab. I heard someone gasp, followed by a burst of laughter.
