Roy straightened and walked back toward the house. I followed.
Margaret looked startled when we entered.
“Did you forget something?”
“Did you arrange for Tessa to confront Vanessa?” Roy asked.
“What a ridiculous question.”
I played the recording.
Her expression changed as she realized she’d been exposed.
“I was only trying to make you see what kind of woman you’ve married,” she admitted.
“Why?” Roy asked, his voice breaking.
“Because you were happier before her! You used to visit me all the time. Now she has you at that hospital constantly. She’s made you neglect your family.”
“My marriage was my choice, Mom.”
Margaret launched into a furious speech about everything she’d sacrificed raising him alone. Then she threatened him.“She’ll abandon you eventually. And who’ll be there for you? Me. Only me.”
“Loving my wife doesn’t mean I love you less,” Roy replied.
