My mother-in-law shoved me into the deep pool, shrieking, “Her fake pregnancy is over!” Unable to swim, I sank into the dark abyss. Waking up in the hospital, the doctor said, “The baby is safe, but your husband filed for divorce an hour ago.”

Then at his mother.

“I should have defended her a long time ago.”

My heart skipped.

But it was too late.

Far too late.

The doctor asked everyone to leave.

Eventually, the room became quiet again.

Only Ethan remained.

He stood beside the door.

“I know you hate me.”

I looked out the window.

“I don’t hate you.”

He looked surprised.

“I just don’t trust you.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I love you.”

I slowly turned toward him.

“Love isn’t what you say after someone nearly dies.”

He said nothing.

“Love is what you do when nobody is watching.”

He lowered his head.

“And you weren’t there.”

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

“I was manipulated.”

“Yes.”

“I was afraid.”

“Yes.”

“But I never stopped loving you.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

“Then why did you file for divorce?”

He froze.

Finally, he whispered,

“Because I thought it would protect you.”

“From what?”

He didn’t answer.

My heart began racing.

“Ethan.”

He looked at me.

“Tell me.”

He pulled out his phone.

Then he placed it on the table beside my bed.

“I found out something about your accident.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“The police are investigating.”
