My husband abandoned me at O’Hare in the middle of a blizzard and drove away without looking back.

She glanced toward the dining room, where Elena sat surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

“You would have needed to turn around years earlier.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

Claire didn’t say it cruelly.

That somehow made it hurt more.

He finally understood that their marriage had not ended simply because he abandoned Claire during one terrible snowstorm.

The storm had only stripped away the final excuse.

Claire briefly touched his arm.

“Take care of yourself, Daniel.”

Then she walked into the dining room.

Elena saw her and waved.

Claire smiled and joined the table.

Daniel remained near the coatroom for several seconds before eventually following.

He didn’t collapse.

He didn’t beg.

He didn’t make a scene.

Real life rarely provided endings that theatrical.

Instead, Daniel sat at the opposite end of the table and watched Claire laugh at something Elena’s daughter had said.

For nineteen years, he had assumed Claire would always be there because she always had been.

Now she was only fifteen feet away.

And completely belonged to her own life.

Outside the restaurant, snow began falling over Evanston.

Light snow this time.

Nothing like O’Hare.

Claire noticed it through the window.

For a brief moment, she remembered the airport curb.

Her suitcase in the snow.

Daniel’s disappearing taillights.

And the strange silence afterward.

Then Elena lifted her glass for a toast.

Claire turned away from the window.

And this time, she didn’t look back.
