My husband left me stranded at O’Hare during a blizzard and drove away. I never returned home. Ten days later, he finally asked the housekeeper, “Where has my wife been?” One answer was enough to bring him to his knees.
The blizzard had already swallowed half of Chicago when Daniel Mercer pulled the SUV up outside Terminal 3 at O’Hare.
His wife, Claire, stared through the windshield at snow blowing almost horizontally across the road.
“Daniel, my flight was canceled three hours ago.”
His hands remained on the steering wheel.
“Then find a hotel.”
Claire slowly turned toward him.
“You drove all the way here to pick me up.”
“I drove here because you kept calling.”
After nineteen years of marriage, Claire knew the coldness in Daniel’s voice well.
But this was different.
He was furious because she had refused to sign documents transferring her late father’s lake house into a trust Daniel controlled.
“I’m not signing anything tonight,” she said.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Then he reached across her, opened the passenger door, and said,
“Get out.”
For a moment, Claire thought he was bluffing.
He wasn’t.
Her suitcase was already sitting on the curb when she stepped into ankle-deep snow.
Before she even had time to close the door, Daniel accelerated away.
Claire stood beneath the airport lights and watched his taillights disappear into the white storm.
Her phone battery was at eleven percent.
Nearby hotels were full.
Roads were closing.
Hundreds of stranded passengers crowded the terminals.
Claire could have called Daniel again.
Instead, she removed his number from her favorites.
By morning, something inside her had changed.
She found the first available hotel room near Rosemont for two nights, called her attorney, and told no one in Daniel’s household where she planned to go afterward.
Daniel returned to their six-bedroom home in Lake Forest.
He told their housekeeper, Elena Ruiz, that Claire had “decided to stay downtown.”
Then he went back to his normal routine.
