Does unplugging appliances save electricity? I don’t think so, but my husband unplugs almost everything after using it, saying it saves a lot of electricity. I’d love everyone’s opinions on this.

That’s why the question shouldn’t necessarily be:

**“Should I unplug everything?”**

A better question is:

**“Which devices are actually worth unplugging?”**

## The Biggest Difference Often Comes From High-Consumption Appliances

If the goal is to reduce electricity usage, focusing on devices that actively consume large amounts of energy is usually more important than obsessing over tiny standby loads.

Heating and cooling equipment can consume substantial amounts of electricity.

Electric water heaters can be significant contributors.

Clothes dryers, ovens, air conditioners, space heaters, and other high-power appliances can have a much greater effect on household energy use than a small electronic device sitting in standby.

That doesn’t make phantom power irrelevant.

It simply puts it into perspective.

If someone spends hours unplugging a tiny charger while leaving an inefficient heating or cooling system running unnecessarily, their effort may not be directed toward the biggest opportunity.

## Why My Husband Still Might Have a Point

Even after learning about standby power, I still don’t think I’d want to unplug every appliance in the house.

But I can understand why my husband does it.

There are several situations where unplugging devices makes practical sense.

For example, if something is used very rarely, there may be little reason to keep it connected all the time.

A seasonal appliance that sits unused for months is an obvious candidate.

The same can apply to guest-room electronics, spare chargers, rarely used kitchen equipment, or entertainment devices that aren’t needed for long periods.

If a device consumes standby power continuously, disconnecting it eliminates that consumption completely.

The savings from one device might be tiny.

But a collection of devices can add up.

## The Real Question Is Whether the Savings Are Worth the Effort

This is where personal preference enters the conversation.

Suppose unplugging a particular device saves only a small amount of electricity over an entire year.

Is it worth bending down behind a cabinet every day to unplug it?

For some people, yes.

For others, absolutely not.

There is also the issue of convenience.

Imagine unplugging your television every night.

Then, the next morning, you have to reach behind the entertainment center to reconnect it.

Do that every day for months, and you might decide the effort isn’t worth the small savings.

A better solution could be using a switchable power strip.

Instead of removing six different plugs individually, you can turn off the power supply to several devices at once.

That makes energy conservation much easier.

## Power Strips Can Make the Habit Easier

A power strip can be particularly useful for entertainment systems.

Consider everything that may be connected around a television:

* Television

* Streaming device

* Game console

* Sound system

* Blu-ray player

* Cable or satellite equipment

Instead of unplugging each device separately, they can sometimes be grouped together on a suitable power strip.

When the equipment isn’t needed, turning off the strip can disconnect several devices simultaneously.

However, not every device should automatically be switched off.

Some equipment may need continuous power to perform updates, maintain settings, record programs, monitor security, or remain connected to a network.

This is why it’s important to understand what each device actually does before routinely cutting power.
