Then 11:15.

Then 11:42.

I told myself not to worry.

She was at prom.

She was having fun.

She wasn’t supposed to spend the evening texting her mother.

But mothers don’t always listen to logic.

By midnight, I was pacing.

At 12:13, I called.

No answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

At 12:26, headlights appeared outside.

I rushed toward the window.

Their car pulled into the driveway.

I saw Iris get out.

She wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t injured.

She wasn’t angry.

She looked…

Confused.

Excited.

Almost overwhelmed.

That immediately made me nervous.

The front door opened.

“Mom!”

Iris ran inside.

“What happened?”

She dropped her purse on the chair.

“You are never going to believe this.”

I stared at her.

“Believe what?”

She started laughing.

Then she stopped.

“I don’t even know how to explain it.”

I glanced toward Ryan.

He was standing behind her.

And something about his expression made my stomach tighten.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

Iris nodded.

“I’m fine.”

“Did something happen?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

She looked at Ryan.

He looked at her.

Then she suddenly said:

“Actually, let me get Ryan some water.”

Before I could respond, she disappeared into the kitchen.

I turned toward Ryan.

He wasn’t smiling anymore.

The warmth I’d seen earlier was gone.

He looked serious.

Almost angry.

“Ryan?”

He took a slow breath.

Then he said something I will never forget.

“You have five minutes.”

I blinked.

“What?”

“Five minutes to tell her the truth.”

My heart stopped.

“What are you talking about?”

He stared directly at me.

“Or I will.”

The Secret I Had Buried

There are moments in life when the past doesn’t feel like the past anymore.

It feels like it has been waiting.

Waiting behind a door.

Waiting for the right person to ask the right question.

Waiting for you to become too tired to keep running.

That was what happened to me.

Because I knew exactly which truth Ryan was talking about.

I just couldn’t understand how he knew.

“Where did you hear that?” I whispered.
