My Daughter’s Prom Date Was the Boy Every Girl Wanted—But When He Brought Her Home, He Looked at Me and Said, “You Have Five Minutes to Tell Her the Truth, or I Will.”

For months, my daughter Iris had been counting down to prom.

I had never seen her so excited about anything.

Every morning seemed to begin with another question about the dress. Every afternoon brought another conversation about flowers, shoes, hairstyles, photographs, or music. Her bedroom gradually became a collection of prom-related decisions, with dresses hanging from the closet door and screenshots of hairstyles scattered across her phone.

For once, Iris wasn’t worried about school.

She wasn’t worried about college applications.

She wasn’t worried about the fact that she had grown up without her father.

She was simply happy.

And after everything my daughter had been through, I desperately wanted her to have that happiness.

Then there was Ryan.

Ryan was the kind of boy everyone at school knew.

He was captain of the football team, an honor student, and the sort of person teachers described as “responsible.” He was polite to adults, friendly to younger students, and apparently popular with nearly every girl in Iris’s class.

Iris had never admitted she had a crush on him.

She didn’t have to.

I knew.

A mother notices things.

So when Ryan finally asked her to prom, Iris came running into the kitchen with an expression I’d never seen before.

“Mom!”

I turned around from the stove.

“What happened?”

“He asked me.”

I stared at her.

“Who?”

She rolled her eyes.

“Ryan!”

Then she screamed.

Actually screamed.

She jumped up and down in the kitchen like she was eight years old again.

I started laughing.

“Okay, okay! I get it. Ryan asked you.”

“He actually asked me!”

“I heard you the first time.”

“You don’t understand.”

“I think I understand perfectly.”

“No, Mom. You don’t.”

She grabbed her phone and showed me the message.

I pretended to study it carefully.
