But in some cases, changes in the legs, ankles, feet, or skin can be connected to liver health.

The liver helps with many important jobs in the body, including processing nutrients, filtering harmful substances, and supporting normal blood clotting. Liver disease can sometimes be silent in the early stages, and symptoms may only become obvious when the liver is more affected. Common symptoms can include swelling in the legs or abdomen, easy bruising, jaundice, dark urine, pale stool, fatigue, and itchy skin.

This does not mean every leg symptom is caused by the liver. Swollen feet, cramps, itching, or bruising can also come from circulation problems, kidney disease, heart problems, medications, injury, dehydration, or standing for too long. But if these symptoms keep returning or appear with other warning signs, it is worth paying attention.

1. Swollen Legs, Ankles, or Feet

One possible warning sign is swelling in the lower legs, ankles, or feet. This swelling is called edema. In liver disease, especially cirrhosis, fluid can build up in the body and cause swelling in the legs or abdomen. NIDDK lists swelling in the lower legs, ankles, or feet as a symptom of cirrhosis, and Mayo Clinic also includes swelling in the legs, feet, or ankles among possible cirrhosis symptoms.

This swelling may make shoes feel tighter than usual. Socks may leave deep marks around the ankles, or the skin may feel stretched and heavy.

Swelling alone does not prove liver disease, but it should not be ignored if it is persistent, affects both legs, or appears with a swollen belly, yellow skin, dark urine, or unusual tiredness.

2. Itchy Skin on the Legs or Feet

Itchy skin can happen for many simple reasons, such as dry weather, allergies, soap, or skin irritation. But severe or persistent itching can also appear with liver problems, especially when bile flow is affected or when liver disease becomes more advanced.

NIDDK lists severe itchy skin as a possible symptom of cirrhosis, and the NHS also includes itchy skin among symptoms of cirrhosis.

This itching may be worse at night for some people. It may affect the legs, feet, arms, palms, or soles. If the itching does not improve with normal skin care, or if it happens with yellowing of the eyes, dark urine, pale stool, or swelling, it is better to get medical advice.

3. Frequent Leg or Foot Cramps

Your legs may not be the first place you think of when you hear the word “liver.” Most people connect…

[1

post-258","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
