My sister kept walking around my husband wearing only a towel and called it a “test”—then one day, he did something that made her turn bright red. When my younger sister Kayla called me sobbing after her boyfriend of six years kicked her out, I didn’t hesitate. She had two suitcases, under $300, and nowhere to go.

“Because Andrew is usually in the kitchen.”

She laughed.

“He’s your husband, not some teenage boy.”

“I know.”

I kept my voice calm.

“I’m just asking because it makes me uncomfortable.”

For a moment, she stared at me.

Then she shrugged.

“Fine.”

I thought that was the end of it.

I was wrong.

## It Became a Pattern

After that conversation, Kayla didn’t stop.

She became more deliberate.

She’d come downstairs wearing a towel while Andrew was eating breakfast.

She’d linger in the kitchen.

She’d ask him questions.

She’d stand beside him while he made coffee.

She’d walk through the living room while he was watching television.

Every time, I felt more uncomfortable.

And every time I said something, she acted as though I were the problem.

One afternoon, she asked Andrew to reach something from a high cabinet.

I was standing only a few feet away.

Andrew looked at the cabinet.

Then at me.

Then at Kayla.

“You can probably get that yourself.”

She laughed.

“Come on. You’re taller.”

Andrew got the item quickly and immediately walked away.

I watched him leave.

Kayla watched him too.

Then she turned toward me.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

But it wasn’t nothing.

Something had changed.

## The Conversation I Didn’t Want to Have

That night, I knocked on Kayla’s bedroom door.
