My sister: “What is that?”
Me: “I have no idea.”
My sister: “Why is there a shelf?”
Me: “Why **is** there a shelf?”
My sister: “Is this normal?”
Me: “I’m starting to think maybe?”
Neither of us had an answer.
The strange part was that once I knew toilets like this existed, I realized there were probably countless other everyday designs I’ve never encountered.
Different countries have different electrical outlets, door locks, washing machines, kitchen appliances, shower systems, heating systems, and bathroom fixtures.
Even things we use every day aren’t as universal as we imagine.
So maybe the real lesson from my sister’s mysterious toilet isn’t about toilets at all.
Maybe it’s about how confidently we assume the familiar version of something is the only version.
We grow up using a particular design, and eventually, we stop noticing it. It becomes invisible because it’s so ordinary.
Then one day, we encounter a different design.
And suddenly we’re calling our relatives asking why someone put a shelf in the toilet.
To be fair, I still think my sister’s reaction was completely reasonable.
Because no matter how practical the explanation may be, the first time you see one, it really does look strange.
You don’t expect a toilet to have a platform.
You expect a bowl.
Water.
A drain.
That’s about it.
A shelf feels like an unnecessary plot twist.
But now she knows.
And, more importantly, now I know too.
So if someone ever calls me in the future and says, “I’ve moved into a new house, and there’s a weird shelf inside my toilet,” I won’t be completely useless.
I’ll at least know that there may be an explanation.
I’ll probably still laugh first.
But then I’ll explain that it could be an intentional toilet design with a specific purpose, rather than a bizarre accident or a broken fixture.
My sister, meanwhile, has another unexpected story about her new home.
She moved in yesterday.
She probably expected the usual chaos of unpacking.
Instead, one of her first major discoveries was an architectural mystery hiding in plain sight in the bathroom.
A mysterious toilet shelf.
