The darkness closed around me.
The last thing I remember seeing was my husband, Ethan, standing near the pool.
He wasn’t jumping in.
He wasn’t screaming for help.
He was just staring.
Then everything went black.
When I opened my eyes again, there was a bright light above me.
My chest hurt.
My throat burned.
I tried to move, but every part of my body felt impossibly heavy.
A hospital.
I slowly turned my head.
A doctor was standing beside my bed.
“Can you hear me?”
I nodded weakly.
His expression softened.
“You’re awake. That’s a good sign.”
My first thought wasn’t about the accident.
It wasn’t about my mother-in-law.
It wasn’t even about Ethan.
My hand immediately moved toward my stomach.
“My baby…”
The doctor paused.
“The baby is safe for now.”
Tears instantly filled my eyes.
“For now?”
“We’re monitoring you and the pregnancy very carefully. You suffered significant trauma, but fortunately, the pregnancy is still viable.”
I closed my eyes in relief.
Then the doctor’s expression changed.
“There is something else you need to know.”
My heart began pounding.
“What?”
He hesitated.
