And when something goes wrong, the consequences can be devastating.
The Questions That Remain
As Conrad’s family continues to mourn, many questions remain.
Why was the weighted blanket used?
Was it appropriate for a child of Conrad’s age and circumstances?
How long was he underneath it?
What supervision procedures were in place?
Were caregivers trained to recognize potential dangers?
Was anyone responsible for checking on him?
Were established safety protocols followed?
And could the tragedy have been prevented?
Only a thorough investigation and legal proceedings can determine the answers to those questions.
For the family, however, every unanswered question can become another source of pain.
When a child dies unexpectedly, loved ones often search for a moment when things might have gone differently. They may imagine an alternative ending — someone entering the room, noticing the child, removing the blanket, calling for help.
But there is no way to return to that moment.
There is only the painful reality of what happened and the long process of determining why.
