As the orderlies began wheeling the bed toward the operating room, Grant reached for my wrist.
“Camille, whatever you think you found, you don’t understand the entire situation.”
I pulled away.
“I’m beginning to.”
The doors closed behind him.
Mason looked at the financial documents in my hand.
“What else is there?”
“The affair is only the doorway.”
“To what?”
“Missing money. Stolen contracts. False records.”
I hesitated.
“And something Grant did years ago that allowed me to believe I was responsible for every failed fertility treatment.”
Mason’s anger became confusion.
“What are you talking about?”
I tightened my grip on the folder.
“I don’t know yet.”
But I already feared the answer.
Part Two: The Safe
Grant and Tessa remained in surgery for nearly four hours.
Both survived.
Neither escaped without serious injury.
By sunrise, their parents had arrived.
Tessa’s mother begged hospital administrators to stop the story from reaching the press.
Grant’s mother, Evelyn Whitmore, pulled me into an empty waiting room.
“Whatever happened, you need to protect your marriage,” she said.
“My husband was found with my brother’s wife.”
“Grant has made a terrible mistake.”
