Driven by an intense, almost singular devotion, SaldĂvar founded the Selena Fan Club and eventually assumed management of the Selena Etc. boutiques in San Antonio and Corpus Christi. To Selena, Yolanda was “Mama Lupe”âa trusted confidante, a tireless worker, and a woman who carried the keys to her business operations.
However, beneath the surface of this close relationship, trouble was brewing:
Financial Irregularities: In early 1995, Selenaâs father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., began receiving angry calls from fans who had paid membership fees for the fan club but received nothing in return.
Missing Records: Upon investigating, the Quintanilla family discovered that checks were missing, bank accounts were depleted, and key financial documents had vanished under SaldĂvar’s watch.
The Confrontation: Weeks before the shooting, Abraham Quintanilla confronted SaldĂvar, warning her to stay away from Selena and threatening legal action if the missing funds were not accounted for.
On the morning of March 31, Selena went alone to SaldĂvar’s motel room to retrieve missing financial records needed for tax filing. What began as a meeting to hand over documents quickly spiraled. As Selena turned to leave the room, SaldĂvar produced a .38-caliber Taurus Model 85 revolver and shot Selena in the back, severing a major artery.
Despite collapsing in the motel lobby and identifying her attacker with her final words, Selena passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital. SaldĂvar then held police at bay during a tense nine-hour standoff inside her red pickup truck, repeatedly threatening suicide and crying that “it was an accident.”
