My husband and I divorced after 36 years. At his funeral, his father, drunk, said, “You don’t even know what he did for you, do you?”

A complicated, imperfect, deeply human life.

And perhaps that is what his father’s drunken confession ultimately gave me—not a reason to return to the past, but permission to see it with different eyes.

I can remember the love without forgetting the pain.

I can acknowledge the sacrifices without excusing the silence.

And I can say goodbye without needing to hate the person I once loved.

Sometimes, the truth arrives years later.

Sometimes, it arrives at a funeral.

And sometimes, all we can do with that truth is carry it gently, learn from it, and finally make peace with the parts of the story we can never change.
