What About Freezing Food?

Freezer storage presents another issue.

Plastic can become more brittle at low temperatures.

A container that works perfectly well in the refrigerator may not be suitable for freezing.

Again, look for the manufacturer’s freezer-use instructions.

If the container is specifically labeled as freezer-safe, follow the directions regarding how much space to leave at the top.

Food and liquids can expand when frozen, and completely filling a rigid container can put pressure on the container or lid.

Leaving appropriate headspace can help reduce the chance of cracking or spilling.
The Dishwasher Symbol Can Be Useful

Another marking people may encounter indicates whether a product is dishwasher-safe.

But even here, there can be important details.

Some products may be safe only on the top rack.

The bottom rack of a dishwasher can expose items to higher heat and more intense conditions.

If a container says “top rack only,” follow that instruction.

Repeated exposure to heat can also affect the appearance and longevity of some plastic products.

Over time, containers can become scratched, cloudy, warped, or otherwise damaged.

A worn container may be a good candidate for replacement even if it technically remains usable.
Don’t Confuse Recycling With Food Safety

This is perhaps the biggest misunderstanding surrounding plastic symbols.

The recycling number tells you something about the material category.

It does not automatically tell you whether the item is intended for food contact.

Likewise, a product being recyclable does not automatically mean that it is suitable for repeated food storage.

Think of the symbols as pieces of information rather than a single safety score.

The recycling code answers one question.

The food-contact symbol can answer another.

The microwave-safe marking addresses another.

The freezer or dishwasher labeling provides additional information.

Together, these details help you determine how the product is intended to be used.
What About Plastic Number 5?

If you have ever searched online for information about plastic containers, you have probably seen people recommend number 5 plastic.

Number 5 is polypropylene, often abbreviated PP.

Polypropylene is commonly used in food-storage containers and packaging.

That makes it a familiar material in kitchens.

But even when a container is made from polypropylene, you should still check the specific product’s instructions.

The resin identification code does not replace the manufacturer’s directions.

Two products made from the same broad plastic category may be designed for different uses.

One could be intended for food storage.

Another might be designed for an entirely different application.

The purpose of the product matters.
Avoid Assuming That Every Plastic Is Identical

Plastic is a broad category, not one single material.

Different plastics have different chemical and physical properties.

Manufacturers also use different formulations, additives, colors, and designs depending on the product.

This is why saying “all plastic is safe” or “all plastic is toxic” oversimplifies a complicated subject.

Food-contact materials are subject to regulatory requirements, and manufacturers are responsible for ensuring that products meet the applicable rules for their intended use.

Consumers should therefore focus on products specifically intended for food storage and follow their instructions.
What If the Container Has No Markings?

This is where I would be more cautious.

If you have a container and cannot determine what material it is made from, who manufactured it, or what it was designed for, it may be better not to use it for food storage.

This is particularly true for containers that were originally intended for non-food purposes.

A random plastic box may look perfect for storing leftovers, but appearance alone doesn’t tell you whether it was manufactured for food contact.

When buying new food containers, choose products clearly marketed and labeled for food storage.

That makes it easier to determine how they should be used.
What About Old Takeout Containers?

Many people reuse plastic containers that originally held takeout food, deli products, or other packaged foods.

Whether a particular container should be reused depends on the product and its instructions.

Some packaging is designed for single use.

Repeated washing, heating, and physical wear can change the material.

A container that was never designed for repeated heating should not automatically become a microwave container simply because it survived the first few uses.

If the container becomes scratched, warped, cracked, or otherwise damaged, replacing it is sensible.
Scratches and Damage Matter

Plastic containers don’t last forever.

Repeated use can create scratches and other surface damage.

A heavily scratched container can be harder to clean thoroughly and may retain food residues or odors.

Damage can also make the container more likely to crack or fail.

There is no need to panic over a small scratch, but a container that has become badly worn is probably ready to be replaced.

Food storage containers are relatively inexpensive compared with the inconvenience of dealing with leaks, contamination, or damaged food.
Be Careful With Very Hot Food

Another useful habit is thinking about temperature.

If you have just cooked something extremely hot, don’t automatically pour it into an unknown plastic container and seal it immediately.

Instead, check whether the container is designed for hot food.
