No One Understood Why the Mafia Boss’s Daughter Cried Every Night—Until a Poor Maid Broke the Rules and Did Something Unexpected

Part 4: The Man Behind the Flowers

Vincent allowed Elena to stay, but only under one condition: she was not to question Isabella aggressively or frighten her further.

Marco strongly objected.

“She’s already interfering with the treatment plan,” he argued.

“What treatment plan?” Vincent asked.

“The one recommended by the doctors.”

“Which doctor?”

Marco hesitated.

Only briefly.

But Vincent noticed.

That night, Elena returned to Isabella’s room before midnight. She sat beside the child and helped her draw.

Isabella drew the mansion, the trees, and a moon over the roof.

Then she drew a tall figure behind the bedroom wall.

“Is that the person who frightens you?” Elena asked gently.

Isabella’s crayon stopped.

“He comes from behind the flowers.”

Elena studied the wallpaper.

It was covered in faded roses and twisting green vines. Behind the bed stood a tall wooden bookshelf filled with children’s stories.

Elena moved the shelf slightly.

A cold draft brushed her hand.

She examined the wall and discovered a narrow seam hidden beneath the vines. When she pressed one wooden panel, it shifted inward.

Behind it was a dark service passage.

The mansion had been built nearly a century earlier. Servants had once used hidden corridors to move between rooms without disturbing the owners.

The passage had supposedly been sealed during renovations.

Someone had reopened it.

Elena’s first instinct was to find Vincent.

Then she heard footsteps inside the wall.

She pushed the panel closed, returned the shelf to its position, and sat beside Isabella.

“Get under the blanket,” she whispered.

“What are you going to do?”

“Make him think you’re alone.”

Elena hid behind the heavy curtains near the window.

At 2:17, the panel opened.

Marco entered.

He wore dark clothes and held a small flashlight. Moving silently, he approached Isabella’s bed.

“You’ve been talking,” he said.

Isabella remained still beneath the blanket.

“The new maid entered your room last night. What did you tell her?”

“Nothing,” Isabella whispered.

Marco leaned closer.

“You remember our agreement. If you tell your father what you heard in his office, the police will take him away. You’ll lose him just like you lost your mother.”

Isabella began crying.

Marco placed a folded note beneath her pillow.

“Tomorrow, you will tell your father that the maid frightened you. Then she will leave.”

Behind the curtain, Elena covered her mouth.

She now understood why Isabella cried.

Months earlier, the child had wandered into Vincent’s office while searching for her father. Hidden behind a chair, she had overheard Marco speaking on the phone about forged contracts, stolen money, and a plan to frame Vincent for crimes Marco had committed without his knowledge.

Marco discovered Isabella before she could leave.

Since then, he had used the secret passage to keep her silent.

He had convinced a grieving child that one wrong word would destroy her father.

Elena needed proof.

Because in Vincent Moretti’s world, an accusation without proof could disappear as easily as the person making it.

Part 5: Elena’s Impossible Plan

The following morning, Elena pretended nothing had happened.

She served breakfast. She polished the silver. She avoided Marco’s gaze.

Inside, she was terrified.

Going directly to Vincent was dangerous. If he confronted Marco without evidence, Marco might deny everything and convince him that Elena had manipulated Isabella.

Worse, Marco could vanish before anyone discovered what he had done.

Elena needed Vincent to hear the truth himself.

That afternoon, she found an old baby monitor in a storage closet. One part looked like a small white speaker. The other was a portable receiver.

She hid the speaker behind Isabella’s books.

But she did not keep the receiver.

Instead, she entered Vincent’s private study while he was away.

That room was forbidden to all domestic staff unless Vincent called them inside. Elena knew that entering it could end her employment immediately.

She placed the receiver in the bottom drawer of his desk and turned the volume low.

Next, she wrote a note.

Tonight, stay in this room after two. Open the bottom drawer. Listen before you decide whether I deserve to be fired.

She left it on his chair.

At dinner, Vincent said nothing.

Marco discussed business while Isabella pushed food around her plate.

Elena stood near the wall, wondering whether Vincent had found the note.

At nine, he walked past her without looking in her direction.

At midnight, the mansion grew quiet.

Elena returned to Isabella’s bedroom.

“What if he comes again?” Isabella whispered.

“He probably will.”

“What if Daddy doesn’t believe us?”

Elena sat beside her.

“Then we will tell the truth again tomorrow.”

Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t want Daddy to go away.”

“Your father may have made mistakes,” Elena said carefully. “Adults sometimes make very serious mistakes. But the truth does not create those mistakes. It only brings them into the light.”

At 2:05, Vincent sat alone in his study.

He had discovered Elena’s note hours earlier. His first reaction had been fury. No employee had ever entered his private office without permission.

Still, something in her words troubled him.

At 2:16, he opened the bottom drawer.

Static came through the receiver.

Then Marco’s voice filled the room.

“You disappointed me, Isabella.”

Vincent stopped breathing.

“You allowed that maid to stay,” Marco continued. “Now you must fix it.”

Isabella began to cry.

“I don’t want to lie.”

“You will tell your father that Elena invented everything. Otherwise, he will be gone before breakfast.”

Vincent rose so quickly that his chair struck the wall.

For twenty years, Marco had stood beside him.

For months, that same man had been walking through a hidden passage to terrorize his daughter.

Vincent crossed the mansion with two security officers behind him.

Before he reached the nursery, a new sound came through the receiver.

Elena’s voice.

“No, Isabella. You will not lie for him.”

Part 6: The Rule That Finally Broke

Marco spun around.

Elena stood between him and the hidden panel.

“You should have stayed in the kitchen,” he said.

“And you should have stayed away from a frightened child.”

He moved toward her, but the bedroom door opened.

Vincent stepped inside.

Marco’s face lost all color.

“Vincent, this isn’t what it looks like.”

Vincent looked at his daughter.

Isabella had pulled the blanket to her chin. She was shaking so hard that the bed frame trembled.

Then he saw the folded notes beneath her pillow.

He opened one.

Good girls protect their fathers by staying silent.

Another said:

Nobody will believe a child who cries every night.

Vincent closed his eyes.

All the doctors. All the expensive treatments. All the nights he had remained in his study because Marco told him that comforting Isabella would make her behavior worse.

His daughter had not needed another specialist.

She had needed her father to open the door.

“Take Marco downstairs,” Vincent told the guards.

Marco stepped backward.

“You can’t believe a maid over me.”

Vincent’s expression became cold.

“I believe my daughter.”

The guards escorted Marco away. He protested, threatened, and demanded a private conversation, but Vincent did not answer.

He crossed the room slowly.

Isabella watched him with frightened eyes.

“Bella,” he said, kneeling beside the bed, “I need you to hear something.”

She said nothing.

“You did nothing wrong.”

Her lower lip trembled.

“He said you’d disappear.”

“I’m not going anywhere tonight.”

“Are the police coming?”

“Maybe,” Vincent admitted. “There are things I need to answer for. But that is not your fault, and it will never be your responsibility to protect me by carrying a secret.”

Isabella stared at him.

“Are you angry with me?”

The question shattered something inside him.

Vincent pulled her into his arms.

“No,” he whispered. “I’m angry with myself for not hearing you sooner.”

Isabella cried against his chest.

This time, nobody left her alone.

Elena stood near the doorway, exhausted and uncertain. She expected Vincent to thank her and dismiss her for entering his study.

Instead, he looked over Isabella’s head.

“You broke four rules tonight.”

“Five,” Elena replied. “I also moved the antique bookshelf.”

For one stunned second, Vincent simply stared at her.

Then, unexpectedly, he laughed.

It was not the controlled smile he used during business meetings. It was a tired, broken sound from a father who had nearly lost the trust of his child.

“Five rules,” he said. “And every one of them deserved to be broken.”
