My wife, Clara, took our daughter and our son on a short trip to visit her sister, who lived by the ocean. I was overwhelmed with work at the time, so they went without me. But then Clara’s sister, Gwen, called me and said they’d never made it to her house. When the police started searching for them, all they found was their empty car on a bridge over a river. The search went on for years. Divers searched the river over and over again. The police had countless theories, but the most likely one was that the car had skidded off the bridge, and they’d been thrown into the water by the impact and swept away by the current. Two years later, the police officially declared them D:EAD. After that, I was simply existing. Every day, I’d come home from work to an empty house. I never touched my son’s or daughter’s rooms. It was as if I believed that one day they’d come back. Forty years have passed, and my heart still aches. Then, one day, my doctor told me that, because of my health, I could no longer live alone and needed someone to take care of me. So my nephew said we’d sell the house and that I’d come live with his family. That meant I had no choice but to finally pack up my wife’s, my daughter’s, and my son’s belongings. As I was sorting through my daughter’s room, I became so tired that I dropped onto her bed and heard a CRACKING sound. I pressed my hand against the mattress and felt something SOLID. I turned the mattress over and found a roughly stitched slit. I grabbed a pair of scissors, cut it open, and pulled out a BOX that had been hidden inside the mattress. I opened the box. Inside was a handwritten NOTE. It was in Clara’s handwriting. My breath caught the moment I read the first line: “Andrew, if you’re reading this, then something has happened to me.
