Her hand remained open at her side.
She had stopped the situation as efficiently as she had started it.
Then the room exploded into motion.
Chairs scraped backward.
People stood.
Someone called for security.
Others began moving away.
Marcus finally sucked in a breath.
He tried to sit up.
His face turned red.
He looked around.
And then he saw them.
All of them.
The witnesses.
The people who had laughed.
The people who had gasped.
The people who had seen him grab a woman.
Most importantly, he saw Emma.
His daughter.
The child he had promised to change for.
Emma wasn’t running toward him.
That realization seemed to hurt more than the fall.
Marcus pushed himself onto one elbow.
“Emma.”
She didn’t move.
“Emma, come here.”
Rachel instinctively stepped between them.
Marcus looked at her.
For once, Rachel didn’t step back.
“Stay where you are,” she said.
Marcus’s expression changed.
“You can’t—”
“Not today.”
His eyes hardened.
Then a voice from across the hall cut through the noise.
“Senior Chief Rodriguez.”
Marcus froze.
The voice belonged to a senior officer who had been standing near the far end of the room.
The officer walked toward them.
His gaze moved from Marcus to Sarah.
Then to Marcus’s hand.
Then to the woman standing calmly beside the overturned table.
“Do you have any idea who you just put your hands on?”
Marcus stared.
“What?”
The officer didn’t repeat himself.
Sarah finally turned toward him.
“Sir.”
The officer nodded.
“Ma’am.”
Marcus looked between them.
Something had changed.
He felt it.
Rachel felt it.
