Gloria’s progress would be reviewed after several months.
Relief washed over me.
“It’s time to go, sweetie,” I said, taking Lily’s hand.
Gloria gave her daughter a small nod.
“Be good, okay?”
She bent down and whispered something in Lily’s ear.
With tears in both their eyes, Lily reached for my hand.
From that day forward, both our lives changed.
Lily gradually became comfortable in my home, and together we created new routines.
Every night, we read stories before bed. Each morning, she greeted me with a smile that reassured me I had made the right decision.
One evening, she looked up at me.
“Will I see Mom again?”
“Yes, sweetie,” I assured her. “When she’s ready. And until then, you’re safe here with me.”
That experience taught me that love isn’t always about holding on.
Sometimes, the greatest act of love is knowing when to step back, accept help, and trust that the future can still become better.
