Ethan Miller imagined seeing tears the moment he stepped through the front door on New Year’s Eve.
He expected them to be tears of joy.
Instead, he discovered his wife sitting by herself at the kitchen table, clutching a dry block of instant noodles in one hand while the other rested against her healing abdomen.
Their eleven-day-old daughter slept nearby beneath a thin receiving blanket.
Near the front entrance, the place where the warm winter quilt should have been was empty.
Only two hours earlier, Ethan had landed at Chicago O’Hare after spending nearly four months in Stuttgart, Germany. He had been overseeing a temporary quality-control assignment at an automotive plant, working exhausting days while counting every evening until he could return home.
His official return flight wasn’t scheduled until January 5.
But after Claire delivered their baby by C-section earlier than expected, Ethan quietly changed his ticket.
