Yet I was never in any danger with Dad. Instead, he instilled in me a deep respect for the machine, the road, and the pure freedom of riding an open highway on two wheels. A Honda Shadow 750 became my very first bike when I turned sixteen, after Dad and I spent two years rebuilding it together in our garage. While that bike meant everything to me, it paled in comparison to the man who showed me how to ride it. After Mom departed, Dad raised me all by himself—most people call him Hawk because of how closely he watches over everyone with his sharp eyes. While working construction on weekdays and riding with the Iron Guardians MC on weekends, he still managed never to miss a single milestone in my life. He was always there for every parent-teacher conference, school play, broken heart, and scraped knee. Whenever I needed him, his massive frame—usually clad in a leather vest with his grey beard braided—became the gentlest presence in the room. Dad was the first person to hear the news when I met Danny three years ago at a bike rally. Working as an EMT and riding a Kawasaki Vulcan, Danny truly understood my passion for motorcycles. Dad took an immediate liking to him, and the two of them would spend hours working on engines in our garage, talking about bikes, and riding together. At the exact rest stop where Dad once taught me to make my very first solo highway merge, Danny proposed to me six months ago. Dad ended up crying even harder than I did. Our plans were for a simple backyard ceremony with fifty people and nothing fancy. However, my biggest dream since childhood was to have Dad walk me down the aisle—seeing my large, intimidating biker father dressed in a suit to give me away to the man I loved was what mattered most. Dad behaved strangely on the morning of our wedding. With his face tight with worry, he kept stepping outside for phone calls and constantly checking his device, prompting me to ask him three times if everything was okay. “Everything’s perfect, baby girl,” he’d said, kissing my forehead. “Today’s the best day of my life.” But Dad vanished just two hours before the ceremony was scheduled to begin. His phone went straight to voicemail, and his truck was nowhere to be found. As I stood there in my wedding dress watching the clock, my heart broke with each passing minute. All twelve of Dad’s brothers from the Iron Guardians MC, who had been like uncles to me my entire life, were present and kept offering excuses. They insisted he had run into an emergency or traffic and would arrive any minute. Deep down inside, though, I knew the truth. Mom was right from the start about bikers being selfish and unreliable, always choosing the road over everything else. Dad had made the choice to put the road ahead of me.
